Anita Bonds is an At-Large Councilmember and DC Democratic Party Chair.
After attending UC Berkley, Councilmember Anita Bonds began working as a community organizer, working to improve the living and working conditions of local communities in DC. Through these efforts, Councilwoman Bonds was inspired to fight for issues such as civil rights, workers' rights and equality for women and the LGBT community.
As a senior government official in the administration of Mayor Marion Barry, Councilmember Bonds revised the Advisory Neighborhood Commission manual resulting in greater and more effective representation of DC neighborhoods. As a cabinet member of Mayor Anthony Williams’ administration, Anita had oversight over nine District agencies and is credited with restoring quality services to DC residents. In the private sector, Anita worked at Georgetown University, where she created and managed a youth mentoring program, connecting bright college students with disadvantaged youth, and as Chair of the Perry School Community Services Center, Anita worked to break the cycle of poverty in disadvantaged communities and assisted returning citizens in gaining better job and educational opportunities.
Most recently, with the support of Mayor Adrian Fenty, Anita was elected Chair of the DC Democratic Party and continues to advocate on behalf of Statehood, self-determination and budget autonomy.
Anita is a proven coalition builder, with a passion for people. Her great love for her community is the driving force behind her career and the reason she is running to continue as the At-Large Councilmember.
